Project for PhD student (1 month)
Aplex Bio, a Swedish start-up company founded in 2020, is developing and commercializing a next- generation Hyperplex PCR™ technology enabling analysis of 100+ targets in a single tube. The technology enables applications from research to in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) and precision diagnostics. APLEX Bio is based in Stockholm at the Karolinska Institute (KI) campus and is part of KI Innovations.
The focus of the project will be on further improving our multiplex PCR and padlock probe design pipeline to expedite the implementation and validation of custom Hyperplex PCR panels. The intern will contribute to two key activities: (1) Compile, test and benchmark existing open-source solutions for multiplex PCR primer design and (2) Data-driven investigation of PCR primer and padlock probe performance in archive Hyperplex PCR experiments towards the development of smart predictive algorithms. To project will be carried out entirely in a dry lab setting.
The candidate will be based on-site at our premises at Nobels väg 16 in Solna.
The internship can be either 1-month full time or up to two months 50% full-time equivalent (FTE). Fractional FTEs between 50-100% are acceptable upon prior agreement for a total internship duration between 1 to 2 months. Starting date is preferably mid-November 2025 but later start dates are also acceptable upon agreement.
The ideal candidate should have a solid background in PCR primer design and experience using bioinformatics tools for multiple sequence alignment in applications such as qPCR, dPCR, or NGS (e.g., Primer3, Clustal, MUSCLE). Familiarity with Python (including relevant packages) as well as R tools such as DECIPHER, or similar software, is expected. Previous experience with primer design for NGS library preparation or padlock probe design will be considered a strong advantage.
