Sarcomed

Target group: PhD Students (1 month)

About the organisation

Sarcomed, a specialty pharmaceutical company headquartered in Stockholm, was established by Filmon Solomon in 2014. Its primary objective is to introduce novel treatments for rare diseases to the market. The company achieves this goal by repurposing old drugs for new indications using innovative drug delivery methods. By utilising the orphan drug regulatory pathway in combination with improved versions of off-patent drugs, Sarcomed can offer new treatments to patients faster and at a reduced cost. The company has received eight orphan drug designations from regulatory
bodies and has an additional of two orphan applications pending, highlighting the importance and potential impact of its work in the field of rare disease therapeutics.

Orphan Drug Designation

An orphan designation comes with several incentives, such as: 7-10 years of market exclusivity, protocol assistance, 100% fee reductions and eligibility to NIH/EU grants for orphan drug development. For rare pediatric diseases, an additional time of 0.5-2 years of market exclusivity is granted post marketing approval.

Karolinska PhD Project scope
Sarcomed is preparing for a pre-IND meeting with the FDA to discuss the T-DMD project, which is a type of scientific advice meeting. This project is focused on Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has been investigated in 5 clinical studies using our substance. The goal of the project is to review and summarise the results of these studies, as well as compare them to natural history studies. The information will be compiled into a dossier that will be presented to the FDA as part of the information package.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare data and documents according to ICH standards, as well as how to present this information in a format that is commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in pursuing a career in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry. The PhD student will work remotely with weekly meetings (online or f2f) throughout a 4 week period (full-time).
