The Global Database Studies (GloDaSt) team is an international team performing scientific epidemiological studies based on real-world data. The studies are carried out by teams of project managers, data access managers, data extraction specialists, biostatisticians and epidemiologists. The studies are typically large, retrospective, studies involving datasets gathered from national registries, disease databases, hospitals, primary care units, etc. within the fields of oncology, infectious disease, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Project work opportunity
This is an opportunity for a PhD student at KI to get practical industry experience within real-world evidence research in the GloDaSt team. The successful applicant will get the chance to work with different workstreams depending on the current phase of the project(s). Examples of workstreams are: project management, contracting and site recruitment, data access, statistical analysis and data management and epidemiological work. The purpose is to give the applicant an active role in ongoing projects; IQVIA aims to engage driven academics to take part of the daily work within the project management group to perform practical real-world evidence work and epidemiological research.

Project description
The internship will take place at IQVIA Sweden ́s office in Solna. The duration of the internship will be 1 month for PhDs. Depending on the background of the applicant and status of the ongoing research activities, the work can be focusing on the following project phases and tasks:

1. Preparing for research projects

  • Drafting presentations for client meetings.
  • Support with preparation of proposals to clients in response to received requests for proposals (RFPs).
  • Desk research to gather evidence and literature required for protocol writing and study design.
  • Drafting of study protocol.
  • Support with applications to local authorities.
  • Support with preparation of research agreements.
  • Implementation and maintenance of study master file using an IQVIA software for archiving and storing electronic documents for ongoing projects.
  • Performing quality control of project-related documents

2. Data extraction and analysis

  • Data management (e.g. categorization of free text information).
  • Drafting of statistical analysis plan (SAP), e.g. compile annotations rules for free-text variables.
  • Automating assessment of unstructured text by using language processing tool to create queries for extracting and structuring information available in Swedish medical case notes.
  • Validating newly developed queries by running queries on manually coded test dataset
  • Running queries on full dataset and participate in statistical analysis work. Assisting with the quality management process (e.g. performing quality control of SAP and/or analysis outputs).
  • Contributing to the selection, critical revision, interpretation and presentation of results.

3. Dissemination

  • Drafting of clinical study report.
  • Preparation for scientific publications (e.g. literature search, drafting of text).
  • Contributing to dissemination material (abstracts, posters, etc.).

At the end of the project, the applicant will get the opportunity to present and discuss the project work with a broader team of GloDaSt.
